Daniel Richard Moder, born in 1969, is an American cinematographer recognized for his work on acclaimed films such as Fireflies in the Garden, The Mexican, and Secret in Their Eyes. He received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Cinematography for a Miniseries or Movie for the HBO film The Normal Heart, directed by Ryan Murphy. The film starred Julia Roberts, who is also Moder's wife.
Moder was born in Los Angeles, California. His father, Mike Moder, is a well-known film producer, and his mother is Patricia Ann Watz. He has four siblings: Debbie, Jane, Jyl, and John. Moder graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1987 and earned a psychology degree from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1992.
Daniel Moder began his film industry career in 1995 as a production assistant on the action thriller Crimson Tide. In 1996, he worked on the film The Fan, a sports drama starring Robert De Niro and Wesley Snipes. He moved on to work in the electrical department for films such as The Brave, The Big Tease, and Tuesdays with Morrie.
Moder made his debut as a cinematographer with the short comedy film Kid Quick.
