Benjamin Bratt was born in 1963 in San Francisco, California. His father, Peter Bratt Sr., worked in sheet metal, while his mother, Eldy, was a nurse and a Native American activist of Quechua descent originally from Peru. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 14. His paternal ancestry includes Austrian, English, German, and American roots.
During his childhood, Bratt accompanied his mother and siblings in the 1969 Native American Occupation of Alcatraz, an experience that would leave a lasting impact on his advocacy work. He went on to attend Lowell High School in San Francisco, where he was an active member of the school’s Forensics Society.
Bratt is best known for his portrayal of NYPD Detective Rey Curtis on the NBC drama series Law & Order. His performance earned him a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 1999. His work on the show elevated his profile within the entertainment industry.
In addition to his television career, Bratt has appeared in a wide range of films, including Demolition Man, Blood In Blood Out, Traffic, Piñero, Miss Congeniality, Catwoman, La Mission, The Lesser Blessed, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Despicable Me 2.
