Benjamin Bratt was born in 1963 in San Francisco, California. His father, Peter Bratt Sr., worked in sheet metal, while his mother, Eldy, was a nurse and a Native American activist of Quechua descent originally from Peru. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 14. His paternal ancestry includes Austrian, English, German, and American roots.
During his childhood, Bratt accompanied his mother and siblings in the 1969 Native American Occupation of Alcatraz, an experience that would leave a lasting impact on his advocacy work. He went on to attend Lowell High School in San Francisco, where he was an active member of the school’s Forensics Society.
Bratt is best known for his portrayal of NYPD Detective Rey Curtis on the NBC drama series Law & Order. His performance earned him a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 1999. His work on the show elevated his profile within the entertainment industry.
In addition to his television career, Bratt has appeared in a wide range of films, including Demolition Man, Blood In Blood Out, Traffic, Piñero, Miss Congeniality, Catwoman, La Mission, The Lesser Blessed, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Despicable Me 2.
He also starred as Dr. Jake Reilly in ABC’s Private Practice and portrayed Steve Navarro in Fox's 24: Live Another Day.
Bratt is a long-time supporter of Native American causes. He has contributed to organizations such as the American Indian College Fund and the Native American Health Center. His involvement with these causes stems from his family history and early exposure to indigenous activism.
Benjamin’s brother, Peter Bratt, is a filmmaker. The two collaborated on the films Follow Me Home—which Peter wrote and directed, and Benjamin starred in as Abel—and La Mission, another independent film both written and directed by Peter featuring Benjamin in the leading role of Che Rivera.
In 1998, Benjamin Bratt began dating actress Julia Roberts. The couple appeared together at the 2001 Academy Awards, where Roberts won the Oscar for Best Actress. However, they announced their separation four months later.
In 2002, Bratt married actress Talisa Soto. The couple met during casting sessions for the film Blood In Blood Out but began their relationship while filming Piñero. They have two children: Sophia Rosalinda Bratt, born in 2002, and Mateo Bravery Bratt.
Bratt stands at 6 feet 2 inches and is known for his photogenic appearance and commanding presence both on-screen and off. His charisma and stature have contributed to his lasting popularity in Hollywood.
