Plunkett is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm fast bowler, often classified as a bowling all-rounder. His domestic career began with Durham, where he played from 2003 until 2012. In 2007, he represented the Dolphins in South African domestic cricket, and starting in 2013, he played for Yorkshire, wearing squad number 28. In 2017, he was also selected to represent the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
