Lilly Singh was born in 1988 in Scarborough, a district of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Her parents, Sukhwinder and Malwinder Singh, immigrated from Punjab, India. Raised in a Sikh household, Lilly grew up alongside her older sister, Tina Singh, who occasionally appears in her videos.

During her childhood, Lilly described herself as a tomboy. She attended Mary Shadd Public School for her elementary education and graduated from Lester B. Pearson Collegiate Institute in 2006. In 2010, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from York University in Toronto.
While grappling with depression during her university years, Lilly began creating YouTube videos as a form of self-expression and emotional healing. Her creative pursuits eventually led her to relocate to Los Angeles, California, where she expanded her career as a content creator and entertainer.
