Lola Grace Hartley was born on April 28, 2006, one month early that it was supposed to. She is known for her unusual family and her rare condition. Although he has 2 more siblings, Lola and her older sister Claire suffer from a condition called microcephaly. It is characterized by a small brain and a small head. Lola’s parents were told that their baby has 25% chances to have microcephaly but they took the risk. Eventually, when the pregnancy was 22 weeks Gwen (Graces’ mother) did a sonogram that showed a considerable development lag. One month later the baby was diagnosed with microcephaly like her older sister Claire. Even though initially it came as a shock to the parents, they soon realized that it was still their baby and they will love her just as much as they love the other two.
Delivery
That was the moment when they both decided to behave like everything is normal. They didn’t want the same things that happened to Claire. The doctors did a lot of tests in order to establish what caused the microcephaly and all their efforts were in vain. This is why Lola’s parents asked the medical team that helped her deliver to not mention the word microcephaly.
This is why they refused the test after the birth of their daughter. They said that at least they knew what to expect and they didn’t need a dozen of tests to tell them what they already knew. In addition to it, their daughter won’t be tortured by needles and all the medical equipment while she was a new-born.
Different development
Even though Claire and Lola Grace suffer from the same condition, their development was different. Lola is being fed on her mouth while Claire is fed with the help of a tube. Due to their condition they look very much alike. They both have muscle stiffness and increased tone. Claire has longer but rare seizures while Lola has short seizures but they come in clusters. Gwen, Lola’s mother said that she breastfed Lola for two years. Now she can eat with a small spoon organic fresh fruits and vegetables and is also drinking by bottle goat’s milk formula. She is very sensitive when it comes to food because she often develops allergies.
The Hartley Hooligans
Gwen has a blog, The Hartley Hooligans, where she speaks about her children and is trying to raise awareness for this kind of condition. She admits that it was hard when she was walking Claire and people would stare at her and point finger her. Now, that she has two children with the same condition Gwen admits that she cannot say that their family is normal, no matter how much she tried. People won’t stop starring and there were many occasions when she was embarrassed of people’s reaction. When she goes shopping for her daughters she would like stores to have cloth lines for babies with special needs. Gwen posts pictures of her children on Instagram and Tumblr.
