Luiz Felipe Scolari

Early Life and Playing Career

Luiz Felipe Scolari, commonly known as "Felipão," "Big Phil," or "Phil Scolari," was born in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He was born to Italian immigrants and holds both Brazilian and Italian citizenship. As a professional footballer, he played primarily as a defender. Though known for his toughness on the field, he was not regarded as particularly skillful and was sometimes perceived by his peers as a limited player. Scolari played for several clubs during his career, including CSA, Novo Hamburgo, Juventude, and Caxias. Occasionally serving as team captain, he secured one notable title as a player — the Alagoano State Championship with CSA.

Transition to Management and International Success

Following his retirement from professional football, Scolari embarked on a managerial career. He gained worldwide recognition as head coach of the Brazil national team, leading them to victory in the 2002 FIFA World Cup held in South Korea and Japan. After this triumph, he became manager of the Portugal national team in 2003, a position he held until June 30, 2008.

Under his guidance, Portugal reached the final of the UEFA Euro 2004 but suffered a surprising 0–1 defeat to Greece. At the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Portugal finished in fourth place. The team also participated in the UEFA Euro 2008, but after a 2–3 loss to Germany in the quarter-finals, Scolari stepped down from his role as the national team coach.

Club Management and Return to Brazil

In 2008, Scolari took on club duties as manager of Chelsea in the English Premier League. His tenure was brief. In 2012, he returned to coach the Brazil national team. His second spell included winning the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. However, his team finished fourth at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, suffering a historic 1–7 loss to Germany in the semi-finals and a 0–3 defeat to the Netherlands in the third-place match. Following these results, the Brazilian Football Confederation chose not to renew his contract.
