Marco Reus was born in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. He is the son of Manuela and Thomas Reus and has two older sisters.
Reus began his football journey in 1994 with his local club, Post SV Dortmund. In 1996, he joined the youth academy of Borussia Dortmund, where he continued his development until 2006. That summer, he transferred to the U-19 team of Rot Weiss Ahlen. While at Ahlen, he also played for the club’s second team in the Westphalia league, scoring in each of his first two matches.
In the following season, Reus was promoted to Rot Weiss Ahlen’s first team, competing in Germany’s third division. He appeared in 14 matches, starting twice and scoring two goals. During the 2008–09 season, Reus experienced his professional breakthrough, playing 27 games and netting four goals. His performances attracted the attention of top-tier clubs in the Bundesliga.
On 25 May 2009, Reus signed a four-year contract with Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach. He scored his first Bundesliga goal in a match against Mainz. In the 2011–12 season, he continued to impress, scoring seven goals in 12 matches. His contract included a reported buyout clause of €18 million, which led to increased interest from other clubs.
In 2012, Reus returned to Borussia Dortmund for a transfer fee of €17.1 million, signing a five-year deal through July 2017. He officially re-joined the club on 1 July 2012. On 29 September, he scored twice in a 5–0 win over his former team, Borussia Mönchengladbach, helping Dortmund top the Bundesliga standings after six matchdays.
Reus made his UEFA Champions League debut for Dortmund on 3 October 2012, opening the scoring in a 1–1 away draw against Manchester City. On 21 November, he scored the opener in Dortmund's 4–1 victory over AFC Ajax at the Amsterdam Arena. In 2013, he netted a hat trick in a commanding win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Reus made his debut for Germany’s U-21 national team in a friendly against Turkey. He earned his first UEFA European Championship goal on 22 June 2012, scoring in Germany’s quarterfinal win over Greece at Euro 2012. It was also his first start of the tournament.
