Matthew Berry was born on December 29, 1969, in Denver, Colorado. During his childhood, he moved frequently with his parents, living in various cities including Richmond, Atlanta, Charlottesville, and locations in Georgia. Eventually, his family settled in College Station, Texas.
He was raised in a well-respected and affluent family. His mother, Nancy Berry, served as the mayor of College Station, while his father, Leonard Berry, was a renowned professor of marketing at Texas A&M University.
Matthew attended Syracuse University, where he graduated in 1992 with a degree from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Shortly after graduation, he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career in television and film writing and production.
Berry began his career in entertainment as an assistant on the Fox sitcom The George Carlin Show, created by Sam Simon. His aptitude for storytelling quickly became evident, leading him to further opportunities in television writing.
Following his work on the show, Berry joined the Warner Bros. Writers’ Workshop, a competitive training program for aspiring scriptwriters. Through this opportunity, he contributed scripts to several television shows, including Kirk (1995) and Ink (1996). He also worked as a producer and writer for series such as Conrad Bloom (1998), Gary & Mike (2001), and Abby (2003).
Among his notable contributions is his co-writing credit for the film Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles (2001). He also had involvement in the iconic sitcom Married... with Children during its final run.
