Michael Ealy, born Michael Brown, is an American actor known for his diverse work in film and television. He was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. Ealy graduated from Springbrook High School and went on to attend the University of Maryland, College Park. His father worked for IBM, while his mother was employed in the grocery industry.
Ealy began his acting career in the 1990s with performances in several off-Broadway stage productions. His early film appearances included roles in Kissing Jessica Stein (2001) and Bad Company (2002). His breakthrough came in 2002 when he portrayed Ricky Nash, a reformed street thug, in the comedy film Barbershop. He reprised this role in the 2004 sequel, Barbershop 2: Back in Business.
In 2004, Ealy appeared in the television movie Their Eyes Were Watching God, produced by Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones and starring Halle Berry. That same year, he starred in the independent film Jellysmoke, directed by Mark Banning. Ealy gained further recognition for his leading role in the Showtime series Sleeper Cell, for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television.
He went on to act alongside Will Smith in the drama Seven Pounds (2008), playing the character Ben Thomas. Ealy also appeared as the male lead in the music video for Beyoncé’s hit single “Halo.” He had a recurring role in the ABC science fiction series FlashForward and portrayed Dorian, an android police officer, in the Fox science fiction series Almost Human.
