Michael John Harney was born on March 27, 1956, in The Bronx, New York. He pursued formal acting training under renowned instructors William Esper and Phil Gushee, both of whom studied under Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. After seven years of intensive study, Harney founded The Michael Harney Acting Studio in New York City, where he taught and mentored aspiring actors for several years.
