In November 2006, Stone was arrested after attempting to enter the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont while carrying explosives and weapons. He claimed the act was a piece of “performance art.” His actions were widely condemned, and in 2008 he was convicted of attempting to murder Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
The legal consequences for Stone extended further when, in 2013, his sentence was increased by an additional 18 years related to his earlier conviction for the Milltown Cemetery killings.
Michael Stone has been married and divorced twice and is the father of nine children. His later years have included periods of artistic exploration, media scrutiny, and intermittent legal proceedings. Despite his claimed shift in personal focus following his release in 2000, his continued involvement in politically motivated violence led to renewed incarcerations.
