Following New Edition's initial run, Bivins co-founded the subgroup Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD), along with Ricky Bell and Ronnie DeVoe. Their debut album, Poison (1990), became a major success, blending hip hop beats with R&B vocals and helping to further define the New Jack Swing movement. Their hit song “Poison” remains a staple of the genre.
As a solo artist, Michael released songs like “Fresh,” which showcased his versatility beyond group performances.

He founded Biv 10 Records, a label that operated under the distribution of Motown Records.
