The hostility’ between the hosts reportedly began after reports of Greenberg being moved by ESPN to hosting his own show on the mornings without hinting a word to Golic. In addition to that, Greenberg allegedly signed a deal worth $6.5 million in terms of annual pay. But Golic, in his South Bend Tribune interview, claimed that the allegations were unfounded. In turn, Golic said that his relationship with Greenberg was still intact. However, Golic noted that his disappointment was due to the anonymous talks and rumors spread by the ESPN staffers and his workmates without consulting him, such talks exceed the professionalism framework, which is upsetting.
Despite Golic making claims of the smooth relationship between him and Greenberg, ESPN still went with their plan to separate them and shut down the ESPN Radio morning show, Mike & Mike. Golic was assigned a new co-host on the replacement show for Mike & Mike. Trey Wingo became Golic’s new co-host on the show, Golic & Wingo. Since news of their split hit the airwaves, Golic admitted that the experience has been eyebrow-raising although quite interesting. However, the tense atmosphere did not interfere with Golic’s determination and love for his audience. The handling of the issue of the split accrued bitter resentment from Golic’s family. The family claims that ESPN mismanaged the whole matter allowing room for ill-informed conclusions.
In July 2020, ESPN canceled Golic & Wingo and ended Mike's 20 years run on ESPN Radio.
Mike Golic is living with his wife and three children in Connecticut. All his children love sports like their father. His two sons are playing football and his daughter is a swimmer. Mike and his wife, Christine Golic never miss their kids' games. Mike says she adds a unique perspective to the game, as a member of the safety committee, explaining injuries and concussions.
Once, Mike left his show when it was airing, to support Christine, when he came to know that her father passed away. When he was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, she made him work out. She had a lot of vegetables around the house and encouraged healthy eating habits. He now often encourages people to take advantage of the internet and learn everything about diabetes.
