She was raised in a Jewish household as the only child of Ruth Margolyes, a property investor, and Joseph Margolyes, a physician. Margolyes attended Newnham College, Cambridge, where she developed a strong interest in acting. During her college years, she became involved with the Cambridge Footlights, a well-known comedy troupe that has produced many notable British actors and comedians.
