Miriam Margolyes is an English actress and voice artist who was born on May 18, 1941, in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. She grew up in a Jewish family as the only child of her mother Ruth, a property investor, and father Joseph Margolyes, a physician. Margolyes went on to attend Newnham College, Cambridge and developed an interest in acting. While attending college, she began appearing in productions by the Cambridge Footlights comedy troupe. In 1974, Margolyes appeared in the BBC Radio 2 comedy series "The Betty Witherspoon Show" as well as provided voiceovers for the animated Japanese television series "The Water Margin". In 1977, Margolyes landed her first major feature film role as Elephant Ethel in "Stand up, Virgin Soldiers". In 1989, Margolyes earned an LA Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Flora Finching in the film "Little Dorrit".
She went on to win the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mrs. Mingott in the Martin Scorsese film "The Age of Innocence" in 1994. In 2011, she joined the cast of the "Harry Potter" film franchise as Professor Pomona Sprout. Margolyes spent much of her time in Australia and in 2013 she became an Australian citizen making her a dual citizen. Margolyes has been in a relationship with an Australian Professor of Indonesian Studies named Heather Sutherland since 1967.
