Nadia Comaneci was born on November 12, 1961, in Onesti, Romania. to guardians Stefania-Alexandrina and Gheorghe, an auto technician.
Comaneci began participating in gymnastics in kindergarten and was chosen to attend Bela Karolyi’s gymnastics school when Karolyi spotted her turning cartwheels in the school playground. She won the Romanian National Junior Championships, and, as a senior, won the European Championships in 1975 and the American Cup in 1976.
In 1989, Comaneci defected from Romania with a group of fellow Romanians. The dangerous journey was completed on foot and mostly at night. The trek took her through Hungary and Austria before she reached her final destination, the United States.

The couple has one child, a son, named Dylan Paul Conner. The 1996 wedding of Nadia Comaneci and Bart Conner was held in Bucharest and was televised live throughout Romania, with the reception being held in the former presidential palace.
