Her mother, Mary Colman, worked as a nurse, and her father, Keith Colman, was a chartered surveyor. Colman spent her formative years in Norwich, where she attended Norwich High School for Girls, followed by Gresham's School in Holt.

Colman's first exposure to acting came at the age of 16 when she portrayed Jean Brodie in a school production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
