Background

Hershiser was born to Orel Leonard III and Mildred Hershiser in Buffalo, New York. When he was six years old, his family relocated to Detroit, Michigan, and then to Toronto, Canada. Hershiser placed third in a national hit, run, and throw competition when Hershiser was eight years old. Hershiser was a Little League Baseball player until he was 12 years old; his mother handled the snack bar while his father was a coach and league executive. He played ice hockey with the Don Mills Flyers of the Greater Toronto Hockey League during his family's time in Canada.

He attended Cherry Hill High School East in Cherry Hill, New Jersey after his family relocated. He spent his first year on the freshman team and his second year on the junior varsity team before making the varsity team in his junior year. He retired 15 batters in a game against Deptford in 1976, setting the single-game strikeout record for his high school, which he held for 21 years. He also held the school's career winning %, strikeouts, and earned run average records (ERA). His senior year, he was named to the all-conference team.

Marriage, Wife, and Kids

In 1981, Orel Hershiser married Jamie Byars. When he was playing in San Antonio, he met Jamie, the daughter of an employee whose company owned the club. He met her first at the team party, and they got married within six weeks after their first meeting. Though it was a speedy turn of events, their marital life initially went smoothly. His career took a blow, and he had difficulty coping with his personal life and baseball career. Jamie took her husband's problems as her own and managed things smoothly. However, after all those years, they could not maintain their love for each other. They got divorced in 2005. He has two sons from his first marriage.

At the time of his divorce, he sold his team. It was unknown if he had to sell the team to pay off Jamie or whether he did it for the benefit of the game of baseball. After separating from his first wife, Orel started dating Dana Deaver, whom he married in Vegas, in the Bellagio Fountains. He met her in 2005 in Minneapolis. She is an educational specialist who was traveling for work when they met. He did not make the same mistake of getting married soon like he did the first time. They dated for a few years before finally getting married in 2010.

Orel Hershiser is a three-time National League All-Star and played 18 seasons in the Major Leagues for Los Angeles (1983-94, 2000), Cleveland (1995-97), San Francisco (1998), and New York Mets (1999).p>

In 1988, he won the Cy Young Award and was named World Series Most Valuable Player, Associated Press</em> Athlete of the Year, and Sports Illustrated Sportsman. In the wake of missing the 1990 season because of a shoulder medical procedure, Hershiser came back to the Dodgers in 1991 and was named UPI Comeback Player of the Year.
