Paolo Di Canio was born on 9 July 1968 in Rome, Italy. He was born to a working class family. His parents are of Italian origin. He has two siblings with whom he grew up watching AS Roma. His brother and other managers of the family followed Roma but he liked their rivals, SS Lazio. He followed and started playing the game at a very young age. He was very fat as a kid and liked cola which made him even fatter. He, however, didn't shy away from football. He played football with great desire and developed skill which caught the eye of many onlookers.
He signed for Lazio in 1985 and stayed with the club for another 5 years. He played with the club and was and helped them win them promotion to the Serie A. The club started playing in Serie A instead of on Serie C1 unlike the year before. He made his debut for the club in 1988 and played more than 30 games in his first season. In his first derby against rivals Roma, he scored the winning goal and helped the club retain their position in the league. At this point in time, he was regarded as the hero of Lazio.
A year later he was transferred to the Italian giants Juventus. He helped Old Lady to win the UEFA Cup in the year 1993. At Juventus he wasn't getting much time as he used to at Lazio, this created a depressing time for him but he still fought for his place and performed whenever he got the time. He had a feud with the then manager and he had to leave the club after that as he wasn't getting any chances there. He was then transferred to Napoli. He gave some very goo performances for the club, however, he was then transferred to another Italian giant AC Milan. He won the Serie A title the very first year at Milan. He, however, didn't get as many chances as he'd liked to. He again had a few with some of his teammates and so he had to move out of the club.
In 1996 he joined the Scottish side Celtic and became one of their successful players. In his first season there he scored 15 goals in 37 matches that won him the payer of the year award in hs first season itself. After Celtic he the joined Sheffield Wednesday for a handsome amount. He was controversial there as well as he had to go through an 11 ban match after having a fight with an opponent player. After a year he joined West Ham. He is married to Elisabetta di Canio and lives in Italy with his wife. In an interview, he has talked about sportsmanship and his controversies. His salary was among the highest at that time.
