Patrik Laine is a Finnish professional ice hockey winger who was born on April 19, 1998, in Tampere, Finland. He began playing hockey at the age of four and practiced every position but his favorite was the goaltender. Laine's father encouraged him to switch to forward when he reached 12-years-old. When he was just 16, Laine left school to play hockey full-time and made his debut with Tappara during the 2014 to 2015 season. Laine was featured in several hockey magazines as the fourth-best prospect in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Laine won a gold medal at the 2016 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and was the third-leading scorer with 7 goals, 6 assists, and 13 points in just 7 games. He was named the tournament all-star team which helped him garner more attention from scouts.
In January of 2016, Laine moved up to second overall on most ranking lists. Later that same year, Laine was chosen as the second overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Winnipeg Jets. He signed a three-year contract with the team on July 3, 2016, and made his debut in the NHL in the Jets' first game of the season which saw him score a goal and an assist.
