Philip Hampson "Buck" Knight was born on February 24, 1938 in Portland, Oregon. While in college, he ran track at the University of Oregon. In 1959, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He served in the Army for a year but then he decided to go back to school to earn his MBA from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. He partnered up with his college track coach from Oregon, Bill Bowerman to start the company. They each put in $500 to get the company off the ground and into the world.
