Philip Hampson "Buck" Knight was born on February 24, 1938 in Portland, Oregon. While in college, he ran track at the University of Oregon. In 1959, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He served in the Army for a year but then he decided to go back to school to earn his MBA from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. The army was not a great experience or fit for him. He decided that his time would be biter spent making money instead of shooting other soldiers.

Career

Nike cofounder Phil Knight built the shoe company from an idea he had while he was attending grad school. He wanted it to become one of the biggest companies in the world. During his time at Stanford, he created Blue Ribbon Sports, a brand that would eventually became the global power house known as Nike. He partnered up with his college track coach from Oregon, Bill Bowerman to start the company. They each put in $500 to get the company off the ground and into the world.

Phil has a net worth of $21.6 billion, making him one of the world's richest self-made billionaires.
