He spent his childhood in Cornwall, where he attended Trenance Infant School and later Newquay Tretherras School. Demonstrating an early interest in broadcasting, Schofield secured a position at BBC Radio aged just seventeen, working as a bookings clerk and tea boy at Broadcasting House in London. At the time, he was the youngest employee at the BBC.
