Since his childhood, Tresvant performed in many local shows and in school, which got him a lot of attention. It was due to this zeal that made him find some other guys who could play instruments. This led to the inception of a small band. Like many other singers from that came from music groups, Tresvant, as a singer, was born out of a band. He, along with his mates- Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe, Michael Bivins and Bobby Brown began to perform at stages. They started to get recognised by local people.

One day after their performance, Maurice Starr called them and talked to them about his debut album as he was planning to create a new edition of album which would be written and produced by him. As he wanted to cast them in his album, the boys immediately agreed upon the deal. Starr named their band as 'New Edition. Thus in 1983, the boys came up with their new album, 'Candy Girl', a newer edition of 'The Jackson 5' (a pop act). The band became a sensation in the town and across the country. The title track became quite popular, along with some other tracks in the album such as 'Is this the End', 'Popcorn Love', etc.

New Edition and Maurice Starr broke their partnership owing to a dispute over money. The band however, joined hands with other management group, MCA Records. MCA Records helped the boys come up with second album of their career, titled as the same name of their band. Tresvant voice became very popular among all the members of the band. His voice became a sensation in America, which helped the band to stay at the top positions of music charts.

At first, Ralph was quite reluctant about his solo albums. However, with the success of solo albums of his band-mates, he decided to launch his own album. This led his album's title track to be at the number one position for twenty weeks in a row. Other title tracks from his album became quite famous as he introduced a new kind of music in that era. "Stone Cold Gentleman" received huge praises out of all his songs from the album.

Some of the solo songs of Tresvant were featured on several TV shows and movies. "Money can't buy you Love" and "Some Bigger than You and I" were also among his best hits of all time. Tresvant made little appearance in a TV show, 'House Party 2'. He has around 63k followers on Twitter, which clearly states that he is a very popular singer across the globe. He has earned a lot of money and respect through his singing sensation. His net worth is around $8 million. In 1993, the singer married his childhood partner, Shelly Tresvant. However, he started having marriage problems with his wife and got divorced. The singer married his girlfriend Amber Serrano in 2004.

After years of continuous hard work in the field of professional singing and recording, Ralph had many hot albums in his bag, most of which went up to top the music charts (Billboard and Rolling Stones). Some of these iconic albums include All for love (released in 1985), One love (released in 2004), Heart break (released in 1988), New Edition (released in 1984), Home again (released in 1966), Candy girl (released in 1983), Under the blue moon (released in 1986) etc. Apart from these albums, many others were released, which were Ralph’s solo albums and these included Ralph Tresvant (released in 1990), Rizz-wa-Faire (released in 2006), It's Goin Down (released in 1994) and many other such remarkable albums, which would later become an integral part of the globally popular music culture.

During the pinnacle years of his success in the demanding music industry of the time, Ralph went on to bag himself various movies, which gave him a decent reputation in Hollywood as well as pushed him further into success as he now had a larger fan base (because of the popularity he received due to his roles in several movies in the time). Although these movies never went on to become a great hit, it sure strengthened his position in the industry and gave him many valuable contacts in the concerned industry.

Some of these movies include ‘Get On Up’ (played the demanding role of Sam Cooke, released in 2014), Knight Rider (released in 1985), House Party 2 (released in 1991), Triple cross (Ralph played the iconic role of Sonny in this 2006 movie), Krush Groove (released in 1985), 2004 movie Barbershop Blues (played the role of Jake), Behind Rizz Wa Faire (released in 2008) and many others.

Ralph happened to be the most popular face of The New edition Story. His break out with his career a solo singer wasn't as bold as that of other music giants (of the time) like Bobby Brown and Bell Biv DeVoe. To be honest, Ralph was almost the sole reason of the huge success the band received. Even after all these years of unquestionable success, Ralph continues to work hard to make the band the best among all his fellow competitors.

According to his fellow band members as well as his family, Ralph is a very mild natured man who would never ever hesitate to share his solo spot with other deserving artists despite having the best voice in the group. Just like his old years, even today, he continues to be a loyal and a dedicated member of the globally popular music band. His generosity and enthusiasm to help others is well known among the crowd of the music and film industry he works for. Although Ralph was never able to launch any of his solos as record breaking (compared to his competitors), he sure is well known for his extraordinary musical skills as well as an easy going personality.

Apart from singing and acting, Ralph happens to take interest in many other conventional hobbies. These include sports, travelling and/or reading. Ever since he was a little kid, he used to read himself to sleep; not only this, his immense interest in the popular sports of football and baseball is well known among his peers. He is often seen supporting various football or baseball team in various matches.
