Background and Age

Randy Mario Poffo was born on November 15, 1952 in Columbus, Ohio. He is the oldest son of Judy and Angelo Poffo who raised him in the Roman Catholic religion. Poffo attended Grover Cleveland Middle School before going on to graduate from Downers Grove North High School in Downers Grove, Illinois.

Career and Net Worth

Right out of high school, Poffo was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals at the age of 18 and was placed in the minor leagues to develop as an outfielder. He became a well-known pro wrestler in the 1950s and 1960s. He even made an appearance in "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" for his unique ability to do sit-ups for hours and hours. Poffo entered the professional wrestling business in 1973 during the offseason of baseball. His original wrestling character was "The Spider" and was comparable to "Spider-Man".

He eventually adopted the name "Randy Savage" after his longtime trainer Terry "The Goose" Stephens. Georgia Championship Wrestling booker Ole Anderson also told him that the name Poffo did not fit someone who "wrestled like a savage" which also contributed to his name choice.

Joining the WWE in June 1985, Macho Man had such an effect, that he won his first WWE title just one year later. Savage turned into a WrestleMania staple right off the bat, making his introduction on The Grandest Stage of Them All at WrestleMania 2 where he defended the Intercontinental Championship against the scary and flighty George "The Animal" Steele. From that point, he guarded the title right until WrestleMania III when he missed the mark against Ricky Steamboat in what is considered by numerous individuals to be perhaps one of the best matches ever.

Achievement kept on matching with Macho Man in 1988 when he won a tremendous tournament at WrestleMania IV to win his first WWE World Championship. During his rule as champion, he and Hulk Hogan framed one of the most impressive tag teams to ever step foot in a ring. The Mega Powers were destroying any team that challenged them. A misconception and a pinch of jealous rage involved Miss Elizabeth sent Savage into a fury at NBC's The Main Event, driving him to assault his tag team partner. The two took their conflict to the ring at WrestleMania V, and Hogan won back the WWE Championship.

Marriage, Wife and Kids

Randy Savage was married twice. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Hulette, also known as "Miss Elizabeth". They worked together in the pro wrestling business with Elizabeth appearing on screen as his valet. In May 2010, Savage got married to Barbara Lynn Payne.

Death

On the morning of May 20, 2011, Randy Savage died at the age of 58 due to a sudden heart attack while he was driving his wife Barbara in Seminole, Florida. Time Magazine named Macho Man as one of their People of the Year. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2015.
