Ray Lewis is a former professional American football linebacker who was born on May 15, 1975, in Bartow, Florida. He has an older brother named Keon Lattimore who went on to become a University of Marland running back. Lewis was an All-American linebacker and wrestling star at Kathleen High School in Lakeland where he attended. His stepfather was said to have been abusive and absent most of his Lewis's life. After graduating from high school, Lewis attended the University of Miami where he became a member of the Miami Hurricanes football team.

He was an immediate contributor to the team's success when he became a starter for the Hurricanes' last five games during which he accumulated 81 tackles, two sacks for loss, and four pass deflections. During his sophomore year, Lewis earned the honor of All-American and All-Big East. He also led the Big East with 153 tackles and was even nominated and finished runner-up for the Butkus Award for top linebacker in college football. In 1996, Lewis was drafted into the NFL by the Baltimore Ravens where he remained active until his retirement in 2013. His retirement was largely due to a torn triceps on the October 14, 2012 game against the Dallas Cowboys. His final game in the NFL was Super Bowl XLVII where the Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34-31.
