Rebecca De Mornay (born Rebecca Jane Pearch on August 29, 1959, in Santa Rosa, California) is an American actress and producer known for her diverse film and television roles. Her parents were George Walter Pearch, a radio and television commentator, and Julie Eagar. Following her parents' divorce, she later adopted the surname of her stepfather, becoming professionally known as Rebecca De Mornay. Details of her childhood and family life remain relatively private; however, she spent part of her early years in Great Britain, where she attended the progressive Summerhill School in Leiston, Suffolk. She eventually returned to the United States and pursued acting, enrolling at the renowned Lee Strasberg Institute in New York.

Breakthrough Roles and Early Film Career

De Mornay made her screen debut in 1981 with a minor role in Francis Ford Coppola’s film One from the Heart. Her breakout performance came in 1983 when she starred as Lana in the hit film Risky Business alongside Tom Cruise. That same year, she also appeared in the drama Testament as Cathy Pitkin, helping to establish her as a versatile emerging talent.

1980s Success in Film and Music Video Appearance

In 1985, De Mornay portrayed Debby Palmer in The Slugger's Wife and appeared in the music video for Starship’s hit song “Sara.” That same year, she took roles in both Runaway Train and the Oscar-nominated The Trip to Bountiful. Throughout the 1980s, she continued building a strong filmography with performances in diverse genres, including roles in Beauty and the Beast (1987), And God Created Woman (1988), The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1986), Feds (1988), and Dealers (1989).

1990s Recognition and Award-Winning Roles

De Mornay reached new heights in 1991 with her critically acclaimed role as the manipulative nanny Peyton Flanders (a.k.a. Mrs. Mott) in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Her chilling performance earned her an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain. That same year, she also played Helen McCaffrey in Ron Howard’s thriller Backdraft. In 1993, she portrayed Milady de Winter in Disney’s adaptation of The Three Musketeers and starred in the television thriller Blind Side as Linda Kaines. Later in the decade, she appeared in films including Thick as Thieves (1999) and A Table for One (1999). Additionally, she played Derian McCall in The Right Temptation and had a notable television arc as Elaine Nichols in five episodes of the medical drama ER.
