Richard Stephen Dreyfuss was born on October 29, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York, to Norman and Geraldine Dreyfuss. He was raised in Bayside, Queens, before relocating to Los Angeles. He graduated from Beverly Hills High School and later attended San Fernando Valley State College (now California State University, Northridge).

His acting career began early—at the age of 15—when he appeared in the television production In Mama’s House. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, he honed his talents on stage through performances in Broadway, Off-Broadway, repertory, and improvisational theaters. One of his early roles included appearing alongside Henry Fonda, Jane Alexander, Gloria Grahame, Strother Martin, and others in the television adaptation of The Time of Your Life.
