Playing Career

Martínez began his professional football career in 1991 with Real Zaragoza. Over the years, he played for several clubs, including Wigan Athletic, Motherwell, Walsall, and Swansea City. Known as a dependable midfielder, he achieved notable success during his playing career, including winning the Copa del Rey with Real Zaragoza and the Football League Trophy twice with Wigan Athletic and Swansea City.

Transition to Management

By 2007, Martínez began transitioning to a managerial role, starting with Swansea City. Faced with the challenge of balancing playing and managing responsibilities, he ultimately decided to retire as a player to fully focus on coaching. His impact at Swansea was immediate and impressive—under his leadership, the team lost only one of its first 11 matches.

Time at Wigan Athletic and Everton

Following his success at Swansea, Martínez was appointed manager of Wigan Athletic in 2009. Over the next four seasons, he significantly improved the team’s performance. His most notable achievement was guiding Wigan to victory in the FA Cup final in 2013, a historic win for the club. Shortly after this success, Martínez joined Everton as manager. In his first season with Everton, the club achieved its highest Premier League points total, highlighting his managerial capability.
