Ronald Wayne was born on May 17, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio. He pursued his education at the School of Industrial Art in New York, where he studied to become a technical draftsman.
After completing his education, Wayne relocated to California, where he launched a slot machine business. Although the venture was short-lived, it marked the beginning of his journey in the engineering and technology field. Undeterred by the failure, he transitioned into engineering roles, which eventually led to his employment at Atari.
While working at Atari, Wayne met Steve Jobs. Through this connection, he became acquainted with Steve Wozniak, and in 1976, the three co-founded Apple Computer. Wayne was responsible for drafting the original partnership agreement, managing administrative tasks, and creating the first Apple logo. However, just 12 days after the company’s founding, Wayne chose to sell his 10% stake for $800, citing concerns over personal financial liability if the company incurred debts, as he was the only founder with personal assets that could be targeted by creditors.
In hindsight, the stake would have been worth over $100 billion as of recent Apple valuations. Despite this, Wayne has expressed that he does not regret the decision, given the risks involved at the time.
