Rowan Atkinson is an English screenwriter, comedian, and actor best known for his use of physical comedy on the situational comedies Blackadder and Mr. Bean. Rowan Atkinson was born on January 6, 1955, in Consett, England. Rowan grew up, along with his older brothers, on the family farm and attended both Newcastle University and Oxford University where he earned degrees in electrical engineering.
Rowan began writing comedy revues in college and in 1979 he co-wrote and appeared in the hugely successful Not the Nine O’clock News. The show won an International Emmy Award and Rowan was named BBC Personality of the Year for his performance. Rowan Atkinson has been voted by his peers as one of the top 50 comedians ever; the character of Mr. Bean, created by Rowan, first appeared on New Year’s Day in 1990 and several sequels appeared on television throughout the early nineties. The character transitioned to the big screen in the 1997 feature film, Bean. Rowan Atkinson married Sunetra Sastry in 1990 and the couple has two children, a boy, Benjamin, and a girl, Lily.
