Rue McClanahan was known as an American actress. She is most famous for her roles as Vivian Harmon on Maude, Aunt Fran Crowley on Mama's Family, and Blanche Devereaux on The Golden Girls.
Rue McClanahan was born as Eddi-Rue McClanahan on February 21, 1934, in Healdton, Oklahoma. Her mom, Dreda Rheua-Nell worked as a beautician. Her father, William Edwin McClanahan worked as a building contractor.
Rue McClanahan was discovered by TV official, Norman Lear. Lear cast her in various TV programs, including All in the Family (1971) with Carroll O'Connor and Maude (1972) with Bea Arthur. McClanahan next co-starred with Vicki Lawrence, Ken Berry, Betty White, and Carol Burnett in Mama's Family (1983) for a long period of time.
After Mama's Family was dropped by NBC, McClanahan went on to what became her most famous role as the saucy, sharp southern beauty, "Blanche Devereaux", in The Golden Girls (1985). She worked with Bea Arthur and Betty White, and with relative newcomer Estelle Getty. Each of the four of the ladies won Emmy Awards for their role. The shoe was a runaway hit that broke the sitcom shape by concentrating on the quirks of four senior oftentimes flighty ladies living in Miami.
"Golden Girls" intended to show that when individuals develop, they include layers, she revealed to The New York Times in 1985. Rue said they don't transform into different animals. Blanche, who called her father "Big Daddy," was a regular target of flatmates Dorothy, Rose, and the blunt Sophia who would shoot humdingers at Blanche, for example, "Your life's an open shirt."
After Bea Arthur left the show after seven seasons, McClanahan, White, and Getty returned for a spin-off show called The Golden Palace (1992).
McClanahan kept working in TV, in front of an audience, and in film, appearing in the Jack Lemmon-Walter Matthau vehicle "Out to Sea" and as the science educator in "Starship Troopers."
Rue McClanahan was married multiple times in her life. She had a child Tom Bish named. Mark Bish. She was once married to actor, Norman Hartweg. She was also married to Peter D'Maio, Gus Fisher; and Tom Keel. Her last marriage was to Morrow Wilson on Christmas Day in 1997. She called her 2007 journal "My First Five Husbands ... Also, the Ones Who Got Away."
Rue passed away on June 3, 2010, at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. She passed away after a stroke. She had experienced treatment for breast cancer growth in 1997. In 2009, she had a heart bypass medical procedure.
