Ryan Coogler is an American film director and screenwriter perhaps best known for his work on the film Black Panther. Ryan Coogler was born May 23, 1986, in Oakland, California. Ryan attended a private Catholic high school and began his college education at Saint Mary’s College of California. Coogler later transferred to Sacramento State where he played football, majored in finance, and took film classes. After graduating from Sacramento State, Coogler attended USC School of Cinematic Arts. While at USC, Coogler made a series of short films, three of which were nominated for awards.
Fruitvale Station is Coogler’s first full length film and details the last twenty four hours of the life of Oscar Grant, a man shot to death by a police officer at a BART station. Fruitvale Station grossed over seventeen million worldwide and received the Best First Film Award at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards. After the success of Fruitvale, Coogler was tapped to direct the movie Creed for which he won the New Generation Award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Coogler’s next film, Black Panther, was an overwhelming box office success and had the second highest four day gross in history. Ryan Coogler married Zina Evans in 2016 and was named as runner-up for Time Magazine’s person of the year in 2018.
