He was the run up in the US Junior Amateur of 2000 and he won high school for individual state championship of 2001 against Andres Gonzales who became his future teammate of UNLV, he was playing for Capital High School for Olympia.

He was able to make the cut and he finished tied at 57th. Afterwards, he turned professional and he played for the next tournament for Westchester Classic for the exemption of the sponsor and he finished in the tie for 51st. When he turned professional, it meant that he had to forego the slot of reigning as U.S Amateur Champion.
