Sabrina Dhowre was born in the United States and is of Somali descent. Though her roots trace back to East Africa, she considers Vancouver, Canada her home. Her mother, Maryam Egal, currently resides in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Dhowre won the title of Miss Vancouver in 2014, marking a significant milestone in her modeling career. Since then, she has walked in runway shows, including one for fashion designer Roland Mouret. Sabrina Dhowre met British actor Idris Elba in 2017 at a jazz bar while Elba was working on the film The Mountain Between Us. Elba described their initial meeting as an instant connection. Despite maintaining a largely private relationship, the couple has often expressed their affection for each other through interviews and social media platforms.

Later that year, the couple made a public appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Elba was promoting The Mountain Between Us and Molly’s Game. Although Elba previously stated in a 2017 Essence magazine interview that he had no plans to marry again, his relationship with Dhowre changed his perspective on marriage.

Engagement and Wedding

The couple became engaged in February 2018 during a screening of Elba’s directorial debut, Yardie, at Rio Cinema in East London. Elba proposed on stage, just days before Valentine’s Day. They were married in April 2019 in an elegant ceremony held in Marrakesh, Morocco, after dating for about a year.

Support Through Health Challenges

In March 2020, Idris Elba announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19. Sabrina chose to remain by his side during his recovery. Elba shared a heartfelt message on social media, expressing gratitude for his wife's support: “Just for clarification, Sabrina wanted to be by my side, you know. As much as we talked about her not coming to where I am she did and wanted to, and I love her even more for it and I would do the same for her.”

Alongside figures such as Tom Hanks, Elba became one of the early public personalities affected by the virus, bringing visibility to the global health concern.
