Biography and Early Life

Sam Billings was born on 15 June 1991 in Pembury, Kent, England. He grew up on his family’s farm in north Kent, where his active childhood laid the foundation for his sporting career. A versatile athlete, Billings played several sports including tennis, squash, racquets, rugby, and football during his youth.

His grandfather, Ron Billings, was a champion racquets player, and his cousin, Tom Billings, is an internationally ranked racquets player. Sam credits the hand-eye coordination developed through racquets for shaping his batting abilities.

Billings attended Haileybury College in Hertfordshire, where he consistently played for the school’s First XI cricket team. He later pursued a degree in Sport and Exercise Science from Loughborough University, a well-regarded institution in the field of sports education.

Early Professional Career

Billings made his first-class debut in 2011 for Loughborough MCCU in a match against Northamptonshire. He went on to play another first-class game the same year for Kent against Leicestershire. In his initial four first-class matches, he scored 321 runs at an impressive average of 45.85, including a top score of 131.

Twenty20 Leagues

In December 2015, Sam Billings was drafted by Islamabad United for the inaugural Pakistan Super League (PSL) held in the United Arab Emirates in early 2016. In his debut PSL season, he played five matches, scoring a total of 34 runs with a top score of 26. Despite limited success on the field, Billings valued the experience of sharing the dressing room with seasoned players like Brad Haddin, citing it as a significant learning opportunity. He was retained by Islamabad United for the 2017 season as well.

In the 2016 Indian Premier League (IPL), Billings was acquired by the Delhi Daredevils for approximately £30,000. He made an immediate impact by scoring 54 runs in his debut match, contributing to Delhi’s victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders. He went on to play four more matches in that season before the team’s exit at the group stage.

He was retained by the Delhi Daredevils for the 2017 IPL season. However, due to England’s international commitments, he was scheduled to leave the tournament by 1 May 2017 to prepare for matches against Ireland and the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.
