Sean Gregory May was born on April 4, 1984 in Chicago, Illinois to Scott and Debbie May and grew up in Bloomington, Indiana. May was a 6'9″ power forward and a three-time all-state selection at Bloomington High School North. May also was playing in the McDonald's High School All-American team. His father Scott May was a forward on the school's undefeated NCAA championship team and won the Naismith Award in the 1976, and his brother Scott May Jr. played for the Indiana basketball team that made the NCAA title game in 2002. Sean in fact begun his basketball career by recruiting rank in the 2002. After High school it had been thought that May would stay in his hometown and play for the Indiana University Hoosiers, Sean chose to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
At North Carolina, May was the starting center for the Tar Heels basketball team for two years, from 2003 to 2005. Sean represented the United States in international competition and won a Gold Medal at the 2004 FIBA Americas U-20 Championship. May was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2005 NCAA tournament after leading North Carolina to its fourth national championship. May and his father are one of four father-son duos to each win an NCAA basketball championship. In the end of the 2007 May announced that he had decided to have micro fracture surgery on his right knee, consequently missing the entire 2007 – 08 NBA season. The effects of the surgery affected him the following season, as he experienced conditioning problems, tiredness and tendinitis. In the 2008, May was deemed physically unfit to play, that is why coach Larry Brown place him on the inactive list for the foreseeable future. May graduated from the University of North Carolina in August 2009 with a bachelor of arts degree in African-American studies.
During the years after university (from 2009 till now) he is an unrestricted free agent and signed a contracts with many teams and companies such as Fenerbahçe Ülker of Turkey (2010 – 2011), KK Zagreb of Croatia (2011), Sutor Basket Montegranaro in Italy (2012) than he signed a two-year deal with Paris-Levallois Basket of France, but played only one game because of injury. In the 2014, May signed with SPO Rouen Basket and then Orléans Loiret Basket for the rest of the season.
