After recovering, Napier resumed play but soon entered a journeyman phase of his NBA career. Over subsequent seasons, he played for several franchises, including the Orlando Magic, Portland Trail Blazers, Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
In July 2019, as part of the complex sign-and-trade deal involving Kevin Durant and D'Angelo Russell, the Golden State Warriors acquired Napier along with Treveon Graham. Within 24 hours, both players were traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a move aimed at managing salary cap flexibility. Napier's $1.8 million unguaranteed contract allowed the Warriors to avoid financial penalty if waived before January 10 of that season.
Later in his career, Napier transitioned to playing overseas, further showcasing his skills in top-tier European competitions such as the EuroLeague. His adaptability and leadership continued to earn respect internationally.
Shabazz Napier has maintained a private personal life when it comes to romantic relationships. There is no public record of marriage or children, and speculations regarding his dating life remain unconfirmed. He is known, however, for his strong family ties, particularly with his mother, Carmen Velasquez.
Carmen, a single mother, raised three children in the challenging environment of Mission Hill. Her influence and support were pivotal in Napier's development, both on and off the court. When resources became limited and recognizing the need for structured mentorship, Carmen arranged for Shabazz to live with a relative, former NBA player Will Blalock. Blalock provided additional guidance and helped nurture Napier's burgeoning basketball talent.
