Early Life and Background
Shay Mitchell, born Shannon Ashley Mitchell in 1987, is a Canadian actress, author, entrepreneur, and model. She was born in Mississauga, Ontario, to a multicultural family. Her mother, Precious Garcia, is Filipino and originally from Pampanga, Philippines; she immigrated to Canada at the age of 19. Her father, Mark Mitchell, has Irish and Scottish heritage. Both parents worked in the finance industry. Shay has a younger brother, born in 1996. She is also a second cousin of Tony Award-winning actress and singer Lea Salonga, best known for originating the role of Kim in the musical 'Miss Saigon.'

Early Interest in Performing Arts
From a young age, Mitchell showed a strong interest in the performing arts. She began dance lessons at five years old and was determined to pursue a career in entertainment. When she was 10, her family moved to West Vancouver, British Columbia. A year later, she attended an international open casting call for pre-teens and teens and was successfully selected by a modeling agency. She attended Rockridge Secondary School before transferring to West Vancouver Secondary School, where she completed her high school education.
Modeling Career
Mitchell began her modeling career in her late teens, working internationally in cities such as Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Barcelona. These experiences helped her build confidence and gain international exposure. Eventually, she returned to Toronto to study acting and pursue a career in television and film.
Transition to Acting
Shay Mitchell signed with a theatrical agency and began appearing in national commercials. Her first TV acting role was in the teen drama series 'Degrassi: The Next Generation.' She also made a guest appearance on the Canadian police drama 'Rookie Blue' and appeared in Sean Paul's music video for the song "Hold My Hand." Additionally, she played Irina Webber, a cheerleader, in the Disney XD series 'Aaron Stone.'
