Sunny Hostin, born Asunción Cummings on October 20, 1968, in New York City, is an American lawyer, journalist, columnist, and social commentator. She was raised in the Bronx by her mother, Rosa Beza, who is Puerto Rican, and her father, William Cummings, an African-American. Hostin attended the Dominican Academy, an all-girls Catholic school in New York City, where she became fluent in both English and Spanish. She later enrolled at Binghamton University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Rhetoric. She then completed her Juris Doctor at Notre Dame Law School.
After graduating from law school, Hostin began her legal career as a law clerk for Judge Robert M. Bell of the Maryland Court of Appeals. She went on to serve as a trial attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division and eventually became a federal prosecutor. During her tenure as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Columbia, she specialized in prosecuting child sex crimes—a role in which she earned a Special Achievement Award for her work.
Hostin transitioned from law to media by becoming a commentator for Court TV, where her legal expertise gained broader public recognition. She later appeared on the Fox News program "The O’Reilly Factor," where she frequently provided legal analysis and occasionally debated the host, Bill O’Reilly. Her television career continued to expand with CNN, where she served as a legal analyst and contributed to various high-profile news stories.
