Susie Dent is an English lexicographer and etymologist who was born on November 19, 1964, in Woking, England. Dent attended the Roman day school called Marist Convent in Ascot, Berkshire. She went on to attend Somerville, College in Oxford where she graduated with a B.A. in modern languages. Dent went on to attend Princeton University where she graduated with her master's degree in German. Dent is best known as the resident lexicographer and adjudicator for the letters rounds on the Channel 4 game show "Countdown". Dent began working for the series in 1992 and is currently still appearing on the show today. She was briefly replaced while she was on maternity leave in 2007 but returned to the show in 2008. Dent is also known for playing herself on an episode of the BBC series "Not Going Out".
She is also a published author and wrote a series of annual Language Reports for the Oxford University Press. She simply titled the first report, "The Language Report". This was subsequently followed by "Larpers and Shroomers" in 2004 and "Fanboys and Overdogs" in 2005. Dent went on to publish "Winning Words" in 2005, "What Made the Crocodile Cry? 101 questions about the English language" in 2009, and "How to Talk Like a Local" in 2010.
