Ted McGinley was born on May 30, 1958, in Newport Beach, California. He grew up near the ocean and developed an early love for water sports. While still in school, he worked as a lifeguard and enjoyed surfing. McGinley went on to attend the University of Southern California (USC), where he became captain of the university's water polo team. Although he briefly played baseball, his primary athletic focus remained water polo.

His father, Bob McGinley, and mother, Emily McGinley, supported his active lifestyle and education. During his time at USC, Ted began modeling, which later opened the doors to his acting career.

Modeling and Early Acting Breakthrough
