Teri Lynn Hatcher was born on December 8, 1964, in Palo Alto, California, to Esther Beshur and Owen Walker Hatcher. Her mother, of Syrian and Czech descent, worked as a computer programmer at Lockheed Martin. Her father, of English ancestry, was a nuclear physicist and electrical engineer.
Hatcher was raised in Sunnyvale, California, where she attended Mango Junior High School. She also studied ballet at the San Juan School of Dance in Los Altos. After high school, she enrolled at De Anza College in Cupertino. To pursue her passion for acting, she later joined the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Before launching her professional acting career, she worked as an NFL cheerleader for the San Francisco 49ers.
Hatcher began her acting career in the early 1980s with a role as Amy, a showgirl, on the television series The Love Boat. She later gained recognition for her recurring role as Penny Parker on the action-adventure series MacGyver, appearing from 1986 to 1989. In 1988, she guest-starred in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation as Lt. B.G. Robinson.
In 1991, Hatcher appeared in the Norman Lear comedy series Sunday Dinner, portraying a young lawyer in a relationship with an older widowed man. These roles helped solidify her presence on television and opened the door to more prominent acting opportunities.
