Stephen Lee Bruner was born on October 19, 1984 in Los Angeles, CA. Born into a group of musicians, Thundercat started playing the bass at an early age. By the time he was 15, he had a minor hit in Germany as a member of the kid band No Curfew. After a year he joined his sibling Ronald Jr. as a member of the Los Angeles punk band Suicidal Tendencies, supplanting their former bass player Josh Paul. His sibling is a Grammy grant winning jazz drummer, composer, and producer.

Thundercat released his first independent album collection in 2011 titled, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, which featured production from Flying Lotus, and was influenced by 1970s musical like George Duke and Stanley Clarke. The album is the bassist's introduction studio collection and was released by Brainfeeder in 2011. The following two years saw an arrival to the chronicle studio with fellow Brainfeeder artist Flying Lotus, with commitments to the Lotus' Until the Quiet Comes (2012) and You're Dead! (2014), and the arrival of Thundercat's second album collection Apocalypse (2013).
In 2016, he uncovered to XXL magazine that he was working on another album collection with Flying Lotus as a fundamental producer. Apocalypse is the second album studio collection by the bassist and record producer. The collection was released in July 2013 under the record label, Brainfeeder. Thundercat released a music video on the MySpace site in February 2014 for the tenth and eleventh tracks from the collection, individually titled "Evangelion" and "We'll Die", which were both directed by the photographer B+ (Brian Cross), who additionally had significant commitments on the collection art.
Thundercat draws motivation from jazz musicians like Miles Davis, Mary Lou Williams, and Ron Carter. Thundercat has been recognized as a significant supporter of Kendrick Lamar. He was named as one of the primary imaginative personalities that were featured with Lamar's widely praised album collection To Pimp a Butterfly. Thundercat featured in the melodies" Complexion (A Zulu Love)", "Hood Politics" and "These Walls". He provided vocals and production for many of the tracks.
In November 2019, Thundercat performed at the Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles. The show made headlines when Drake made a surprise appearance and got booed.
