Timothy Johnson was born on March 13, 1985, in Lamberton, Minnesota, United States. He developed a strong foundation in wrestling during his time at Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he became a two-time NCAA Division II All-American. His collegiate wrestling success laid the groundwork for his transition into professional mixed martial arts (MMA).
Johnson made his professional MMA debut in October 2010, competing primarily in regional promotions around North Dakota. After compiling an impressive 7–1 record, he was signed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2014.
He debuted in the UFC on April 4, 2015, at UFC Fight Night 63, where he faced Shamil Abdurakhimov. Johnson secured a first-round technical knockout victory, marking a successful entrance to the promotion. His next bout came against Jared Rosholt on August 8, 2015, during UFC Fight Night 73. Despite a strong effort that saw him momentarily stagger Rosholt, Johnson lost via unanimous decision.
Johnson returned to the Octagon at UFC Fight Night 86 in April 2016, facing Marcin Tybura, who was making his promotional debut. Johnson won the bout by unanimous decision. He went on to compete in four additional UFC bouts, facing several high-level opponents during his tenure with the organization.
