Tommy Davidson, born in 1963 in Mississippi, is an American television and film actor as well as a stand-up comedian. At just 18 months old, he was abandoned and later rescued by a woman who went on to adopt him. Davidson was raised by Caucasian parents through an interracial adoption and is of African-American ethnicity.
His family relocated frequently during his childhood, living in Colorado, Wyoming, and Oregon before finally settling in Maryland. Davidson attended Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Maryland, graduating in 1982. He briefly studied communications and completed an internship at the University of the District of Columbia. To support himself, he worked in a hospital kitchen and also in the storeroom of Hechinger, a home improvement retail chain.
Davidson's career in comedy began when a friend encouraged him to perform at the Penthouse strip club in the Park View neighborhood of Washington, D.C. He soon began performing at various comedy clubs in the Washington metropolitan area, including Baltimore and Philadelphia. He opened for artists such as Kenny G, Starpoint, and Patti LaBelle and gained further exposure through his appearance on a fundraising telethon for WHMM (now WHUT-TV) in 1987.
Davidson gained early recognition by winning an amateur stand-up competition at the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem. Following this success, he moved to California, where he met comedian Martin Lawrence. He performed at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles, where he was noticed by Robert Townsend. Townsend invited him to warm up the audience for an HBO special, further cementing his reputation in the industry.
He went on to perform for prominent musical acts such as Anita Baker and Luther Vandross, and made an appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show, expanding his national visibility.
Davidson’s breakthrough came with the sketch comedy show In Living Color, where he became known for his dynamic range of characters and impressions. Notable impersonations included Sugar Ray Leonard, Sammy Davis Jr., and the child victim in the Homey D. Clown skit. His performances were praised for their energy and comedic timing.
One of Davidson’s notable film roles was playing Cream Corn in the cult favorite Black Dynamite. He also appeared on the television sitcom Martin in the role of Varnell, adding to his array of comedic performances on screen.
Davidson released a stand-up special titled Illin in Philly, originally distributed on VHS and later aired regularly on Comedy Central under the program On Strength.
