Troy Aumua Polamalu, born on April 19, 1981, is a retired professional American football player renowned for his football tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He hails from Garden Grove, California, but was raised in rural Southern Oregon. Polamalu became a prominent figure in the NFL, occupying the position of strong safety throughout his career.

High School and Collegiate Career

Polamalu attended Douglas High School in Winston, Oregon, where his athletic talents quickly became apparent. As a junior, he was named to the All-State first team and earned the Most Valuable Player award for his school. Despite suffering an injury during his senior year that limited him to only four games, he rushed for 671 yards, scored nine touchdowns, and recorded three interceptions. His performance still earned him a spot on the Super Prep All-Northwest team.

After high school, Polamalu received an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Southern California (USC). From 1999 to 2002, he played for the USC Trojans and was considered a cornerstone of their defense throughout his four-year collegiate career. He totaled 278 tackles, 29 tackles for a loss, six interceptions, and scored three touchdowns while at USC. His time there solidified his reputation as one of the most dominant defensive players in college football.

NFL Career with the Pittsburgh Steelers

Although a knee injury prior to his final college game sidelined him, Polamalu was selected 16th overall in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He went on to play his entire 12-season professional career with the team, becoming a central figure in their defense and one of the league's most recognizable players.

Polamalu quickly became a fan favorite, known for his distinctive playing style and iconic hair. His jersey consistently ranked among the NFL's top sellers. Over the course of his career, he amassed 770 total tackles, 12 quarterback sacks, 32 interceptions, 14 forced fumbles, and three defensive touchdowns.

He received numerous accolades during his time in the NFL. These include being a two-time Super Bowl champion (Super Bowl XL and XLIII), eight-time Pro Bowl selection, 2010 Pittsburgh Steelers MVP, and NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2010. In 2011, he was ranked number six on the NFL Network’s Top 100 Players list.

Polamalu officially retired from professional football on April 10, 2015.

Polamalu was born Troy Aumua but legally adopted his mother's maiden name, Polamalu, in 2007. He has always maintained strong ties to his Samoan heritage and Christian faith. In 2007, he and his wife converted to Orthodox Christianity, a spiritual shift that has played a significant role in his personal life.
