Tyler Joseph is an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and member of the musical duo Twenty One Pilots. He was born on December 1, 1988, in Columbus, Ohio. His mother, Kelly Joseph, was a math teacher in the Olentangy School District and became a middle school basketball coach in 2013. His father, Chris Joseph, served as a coach at Worthington Christian High School. Tyler has two brothers, Zach and Jay, and a sister named Madison. His brother Zach is also a musician.
In his early years, Tyler was passionate about basketball and played as a point guard. He was offered a basketball scholarship from Otterbein University but declined it to pursue a career in music. After watching a live performance at a club, he developed an interest in music, particularly in learning the keyboard. Eventually, he began composing and recording his own songs.
Tyler Joseph formed Twenty One Pilots in 2009 with friends Nick Thomas and Chris Salih. The trio released their self-titled debut album in December of that same year. In 2011, Thomas and Salih left the band and were replaced by drummer Josh Dun. Later that year, Tyler and Josh self-released their second studio album, Regional at Best. In 2012, the band signed with Fueled by Ramen, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records, marking their major label debut.
