Victoria Wood is an English comedian, actress, singer, and songwriter who was born on May 19, 1953, in Prestwich, United Kingdom. She is the youngest child of Nellie and Stanley Wood. She attended Fairfield County Primary school and Bury Grammar School for Girls. Woods went on to graduate from the University of Birmingham where she studied drama. She began her career in the show business when she appeared as a contestant on the television talent show "That's Life!" Wood went on to appear in Yorkshire Television's 1984 schools television program for hearing-impaired children. She also wrote several plays including "Nearly a Happy Ending" and "Happy Since I Met You". Woods would perform her first stand up show called "Lucky Bag" in October of 1983. The show ran for five weeks at the King's Head Theatre in Islington.
She has gone on to write several sketches, musicals, plays, films, and sitcoms over the span of her career. Although she has written several successful plays and films, Woods is most widely recognized as a stand-up comedian. She married a magician named Geoffrey Durham in March of 1980 and the couple had two children together. They eventually separated in 2002. In 2015, Woods was diagnosed with late terminal cancer but she did not speak of her illness. She passed away on April 20, 2016, at her home in Highgate surrounded by her children and their father.
