Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Related Biography: Fernando Colunga

Yo Gotti, born Mario Mims on May 19, 1981, in Memphis, Tennessee, developed an early passion for music amid challenging circumstances. Growing up in a neighborhood deeply influenced by the Southern hip-hop scene, he began his music career at a young age under the pseudonym “Lil Yo.” Although early attempts to break into the mainstream rap industry were met with limited success, his strong drive led him to explore new ways to build a name for himself.

Determined to gain recognition, Gotti focused on releasing independent albums and tracks, hoping to build momentum through grassroots promotion. He performed in local underground venues throughout Memphis, gradually creating a loyal regional fan base. This persistence became the foundation of his eventual breakthrough into the mainstream hip-hop arena.

Career Milestones and Breakthrough

Yo Gotti officially began his professional music career in 2000 with the independent release of his debut album, From Da Dope Game 2 Da Rap Game. Between 2000 and 2006—considered his early career phase—he released several other albums including Self-Explanatory, Life, and Back 2 da Basics. Each release helped expand his reputation in the Southern hip-hop community.

Following a brief period of lower activity, Gotti returned to the scene in 2009 with the single "5 Star," which marked a turning point in his career. Later the same year, he collaborated with Lil Wayne on the track "Women Lie, Men Lie," which gained significant radio play and further elevated his profile. In 2012, he compiled recent works into the studio album Live From The Kitchen, which sold over 35,000 copies in the United States within its first month.
