Considering the successful rapper he is today, it is surprising that Dro did not even consider music as a career in his younger days. It was only after his friend Chris Daddy Mack Smith scored platinum success that Dro dreamed of a becoming a rapper. This was in the early 1990s. To make his dream come true, he joined up with the southern rapper Raheem the Dream in the late 1990s. Dro’s independent hit single Yes Sir and the regional hit album I Got That Dro set the city on fire.  From then on there was no turning back for him. He released several albums including his second studio album Best Thang Smokin’ (2006), High Times, Young & Restless, Day One – DJ Drama & Young Dro mixtape CD, P.O.L.O. His debut single Shoulder Lean (2006) served as the lead single in the album. It proved to be a hit and featured at number three on the Billboard 200 chart. It was aired on MTV2 and BET and was sold as cellular phone ringtone. High Times, his second studio album released in 2013. But it was Best Thang Smokin’ that catapulted him to fame.

In 1988 Dro was planning to marry his girlfriend Fantasia Barrino, the R&B singer and Broadway actress. It dawned on Fantasia that she was too busy enjoying her relationship and ignoring her career. It made her end the two-year relationship and focused on returning to the spotlight. Looks as though Dro is still smitten by Barrino, he says he will be her friend forever. Dro who broke up with his girlfriend Gizelle to date Fantasia, went back her after Barrino ditched him. Dro suggested that they get together as a threesome and told Gizelle who was his girlfriend to invite her friend, a girl, to join them. He ignored Gizelle and got going with her friend and as things do happen, he threw out Gizelle.

Tamika is the mother of Dro’s daughter. He and Tamika are divorced. He has spoken about his struggles with Tamika and how it inspired him to make hit FDB. He accused Tamika of keeping his child away from him and exposing the child to gay life. Tamika is in a relationship with another female. However, Tamika had come out strongly to clear the air. She says the hit FDB is the most blatantly disrespectful song which has become the babymomma anthem since its release. It is 2 years since he saw his daughter, not because she does not allow him to see her, but it is solely because he does not make the effort to keep in touch with his daughter. Dro has admitted to abusing Kush and Molly. Dro uses drugs and had gone to rehabilitation but did not complete his term there.
